Research Journal, Part 4: Types of Information
Practice Questions(Provide answers/sources for each of these):
1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
I would use official FDA websites to compare the two. Also search online for reliable statistics to back it up.
2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have
their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
Check law encyclopedias for definitions of censorship, to truly understand if this fits or not. Also check Law review databases to see if this has been addressed already.
3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?
dept of labor website would have this info already correlated.
4) Should educators use commercial services to combat
plagiarism? check scholarly journals as well as popular magazines to see public opinion on this topic.
5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global
warming?
Check scientific periodicals as well as databases to see if there is any peer reviewed paper on this topic.
1.) how can you verify a source on the internet is reliable?
Check the source its self and see if it has the needed info to be deemed reliable.
2.) what types of information can you find on the internet?
look on the internet and classify the different databases that are available
3.) what laws are in effect for the internet, country by country, and how can you ensure you are not violating them -cross boarders?
search law reviews as well as governmental websites and publications as they pertain to the laws governing the internet.

Hi, William:
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job matching up resources with questions and explaining what you'd expect to find. For your questions, I have a few other suggestions; for internet reliability, I would suggest magazines, this is something WIRED, Time and other general interest magazines cover. Also, subject encyclopedias might have articles about reliability and evaluation of internet sites. There are also watchdog organizations that keep track of international laws and what effect they have on users/countries/businesses.
Cheers,
Andrea
